The Starzz win season opener
The Starzz opened their season against FC St. George in their inaugural game. The matched was played at Desert Hills high school on a beautiful new turf field nestled in the Desert Mountains of St. George Utah. With many new faces the Utah Starzz kept the ball for a good portion of the game against an aggressive athletic opponent.
After several breakaways the Starzz finally found the back of the net. At about the 23 minute Anne Shallenberger took it from the midfield and slotted it up the middle feeding it to Natalie Graham who expertly placed it into the corner of the goal.

In the 32nd minute, Nicole Archibald was taken down hard just outside the 18 yard line and a foul was called. Lauren Dudley took the free kick. After taking a shot, which was deflected off the wall, Dudley stepped up and fired again, this time finding the net.
As the game progressed the Starzz midfielders were able find their composure. The Starzz defense stayed strong throughout the game. The back line limited their opportunities and made keeper Hannah Turpen’s job easier, who is credited with 4 saves during the game.

Coach Mark Graham said “Although it was a great start to the season the team still has a number of areas to improve upon”. The team is taking the next two weeks to prepare for their road trip to Arizona on June 11.
The final goal of the game was set up by Alyssa “2me” Toomey who sent a pass that split the defense from about 45 yards out to meet Merc Koning on a breakaway run. Merc touched it around the goal keeper and shot it into the net.
The Starzz are happy with the outcome of their first game and are looking forward to success in their next matches.
General Manager Steve Shallenberger commented “I felt like the Starzz’s first game was a great overall team effort and a nice trip to St. George.” |
